Peter Wichman

Peter Wichman began to paint full time after retiring from an academic career at Waikato University and the University of Auckland.

Drawing on his background in literature Wichman’s paintings predominantly relied on narrative, often with political and social critical themes.

Three years ago, however, he decided to “cleanse his imagination” by turning away from representation to explore techniques in abstraction that emphasise energy, movement and saturated colour.

He works in oils, watercolours and pastels, and is represented by Orexart on Ponsonby Road, Auckland.

Many of Wichman’s painting are also held in the Wallace Arts Trust collection at the Pah Homestead in Auckland.
